Collagenase is a protease that can specifically bind the peptide bond between neutral amino acid (x) and glycine in pro-x-glyc-pro sequence. This sequence exists in collagen with high frequency. Collagenase is the only protease that can degrade natural collagen fibers with three helices widely existing in connective tissue.
